ABOUT
About PhoneticLab
PhoneticLab is an independent pronunciation tool built and maintained under the PhoneticLab name. It gives English learners, teachers and curious readers a simple place to turn words into IPA, listen to the original text and copy the transcription.
One clear task
Type a word, a name or a paragraph. Choose American or British English. The tool looks up dictionary pronunciations locally in your browser, keeping punctuation and line breaks.
Readings you can inspect
The tool uses the International Phonetic Alphabet. If a dictionary includes multiple readings, you can choose an alternate reading. Unlisted words stay visibly marked instead of receiving invented IPA. Name preferences and connected speech can differ from dictionary readings.
Audio and transcription
Listen uses your browser's available speech voices to read the original text. It is not an audio rendering of the selected IPA variant. Voice availability, regional accent and synthesized name readings depend on the browser and device.
Dictionary credits
Dictionary data comes from the open-dict-data IPA dictionary project, distributed under the MIT license. The project combines manual and semi-automatic compilation. PhoneticLab does not claim independently verified accuracy for every entry.
