01 / COVERAGEWords, names & entire paragraphs
Type English text and choose American or British English. This text to IPA tool looks up each word in a local pronunciation dictionary and keeps punctuation and line breaks. Many names are included, but personal, rare and non-English names may be unlisted. We show those words as ⟦unlisted⟧ instead of inventing a pronunciation.
Each input can contain up to 10,000 characters. There is no daily counter, sign-in or saved history. Australian English and non-English transcription are not supported in this version.
02 / READING IPAA small alphabet for a big difference
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) represents speech sounds. Slashes / / frame a dictionary pronunciation. ˈ marks primary stress; ˌ marks secondary stress; ː marks a long sound. For example, /kæt/ is “cat”.
This is broad, word-by-word dictionary transcription, not a prediction of connected speech. Stress marks come from the dictionary. Syllable division, weak forms, linking and intonation are not added. When several dictionary readings exist, choose a variant below the result; context is not selected automatically.
03 / LISTENINGSee the sounds. Hear the original.
Listen reads your original text using browser speech synthesis. It does not read IPA characters aloud, and choosing a dictionary variant does not control the voice's pronunciation. The selected accent needs a matching voice installed or available in your browser; if one is missing, the page tells you instead of silently switching accents.
Speech quality and name readings depend on the voice. Your transcription is processed locally. Your browser or operating system may use an online service for speech playback.
04 / QUESTIONSGood to know
Is this a phonetic spelling generator?
It generates IPA phonetic transcription, rather than an English-letter respelling such as “kuh-TAST-ruh-fee”. Copy IPA takes the transcription you see, including marked unlisted words.
Why do American and British results differ?
Each accent has a separate dictionary. Vowels, consonants, stress and word coverage can differ. A word in one dictionary may be absent from the other. We do not substitute one accent's IPA for the other.
Can I use a name or unfamiliar spelling?
Yes. If it is listed, you get dictionary IPA. Otherwise the original spelling stays visible inside ⟦ ⟧. Audio can still attempt it, but a synthesized name reading may be approximate. Ask the person for their preferred pronunciation.
Can I use this offline?
The dictionary and tool are bundled locally. Opening this saved page works without an API key or dictionary connection. Listening offline depends on the voices installed on your device. Nothing is saved by this page.
